Boots are to a cowboy like runners are to an athlete. A cowboy just isn’t a cowboy without the right boots.

The story goes that a cowboy, on his way home from a cattle drive that ended in the stockyards in Kansas City, dropped in at Hyer’s Brothers Boots sometime in 1875 or 1876 and told proprietor that he wanted a new pair of boots. But he didn’t want the in the style of civil war boots of the time. No sir. He wanted cowboy boots.

He wanted a pointed toe that would slide more easily into a stirrup, a higher slanted heel that would hold a stirrup on a pitching horse, and a high top that was scalloped in the front and back rather than the stovepipe style. The shop made the boots as ordered and the cowboy was on his way.

When the other cowboys saw his new boots they loved the new style, so the cowboys started going to Hyer to have similar boots made. Thus the cowboy boot as we still know it today was born. It didn’t take long before these new boots had become the preferred western boot style for most cowboys.

Others credit H. J. Justin with the first men’s western boot design. Whomever actually developed the first cowboy boot will probably remain a mystery. But what is known for certain is that both men did a brisk business in mail order with made to measure western boots for men.

Of course Justin® basic Roper Western Boots are still going strong…I wear them myself. Justin bought Tony Lama Boot Company in 1991 which made them the overwhelming force of the western boot industry. Justin Industries, which is made up of Justin, Tony Lama, and Nocona, makes close to four million pairs of boots each year.

Other brands you may see are Acme, Laredo and Lucchese.

So whoever it was who made the first pair, he change the outfit of the cowboy and cowgirl forever. And now it’s not just the riders of the purple sage, but men and women and boys and girls throughout the world who wear western footwear.
